Good Ol’ School

Who on earth started the concept of school? I don't know. How can school be easy? I don't know. How can school go away? It won't...yet. But believe it or not, school can actually do us some good. Read on, fellow student, read on.

RRRRIIINNNNNNNGGGGGGG! What is that annoying noise?  You reach over to pick up the phone when…suddenly the phone looks a lot like your alarm clock. 6:45am. Groan. Back to school.  Hello early mornings, late nights, cram sessions, brain overloads, etc. etc.  DON’T wake me up when September comes!

For most of us, today is the start of the 2006-2007 school year.  It’s time to forget last year’s lousy grades and poor study habits.  I, personally, am PUMPED to start school tomorrow! Nerdy as that sounds, it’s true.  You know, for some people this first week of school may seem easy breezy with intro “lectures” and explanations of course outlines in taking up most of the class time.  For others, it’s a horrible week to get rid of the “holiday hangover” and get back into school mode.  Whether the best or the worst, I’ve come to think that the first week is the most important week of the school year. Why? Because, speaking from experience, it’s our attitude toward school this first week that sets our attitudes for the rest of the year.

Here are 2 tips I’ve learned over the summer to get prepped for a great year:

1. Look UP
Basically, we’ve gotta focus on God in order to get to where He wants us to be by the end of the year.  Sure there will be tons of work that’ll push us to our brain’s limits and will stretch our faith like rubberband.  But that’s the greatest part of learning!  When we realize we can’t handle everything on our own, and find that there is no one else to trust but God, it is then that we finally experience the truth in God’s promise, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” (1 Corinthians 12:9) So stop trying on your own, try God!

2. Make a pact
While it’s great to commit yourself to God and purpose to staying on task this year, it’s too easy to get distracted and give up halfway.  Then what do we do?  Make a pact.  Make a pact with someone (or someones) to help you stay focused and disciplined.  It’s always encouraging to have someone push you to turn off the TV and get cracking at those essays! And it’s always de-stressing talking to friends :]

Alrighty, that’s all I’ve got to say about this 2006-2007 school year.  It’s definitely not going to be any easier, but it can be a lot more productive if you want it to be.  Keep looking UP!

6:45 am? I had to wake up earlier than that, in fact I’m suppose to leave by 6:40 for the bus...But I forgot to turn the alarm clock and woke up around 6:47 and jetting out the door by 7. I was late by 20 minutes when I arrived at York, but to my surprise not a lot of ppl where there so thats my story of the first day of school

i agree with what you said, first week of school is one of the most important time of the school year.. not only you set your outlook for the entire year.. but also its the time wher you choose who to hang out with or to be asocieted with.. but we have to choose wisely on friends.. i myself is still adjusting .. i still dont know anyone.. i pray to God though that he gives me the right friends.... christian friends, i would prefer:)… if not.. ive got some evangelizing to do

I’m sleepy....and I didn’t even start school yet!!! (I start next Tuesday - go U of T!!) I agree though.  If you assume the worst, the worst will happen.  Your expectations of the year to come will determine how your year will go.  I can’t wait, I’m kind of excited and scared at the same time.  The clock’s a tickin’…

Hey, nice article. i haven’t been back to school.. for a while.. but planning to get back into the whole scene one i get a few things straightened out.. i like one of the tips “Look Up.” it reminds me of a time when a leader at church told us of a time when he was climbing a rope and he got to the top.. when he looked down he was to scared to climb back down. but what he did was look up to His Father in heaven for strength to make it back down.. he did it slowly, praying everytime he was spooked and looked up.. before he looked down.. we could use the same principle in our daily lives, whether its small or huge.. just put our trust in Him and he will see us through.. “Trust the Lord your God with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. in all your ways acknoledge Him and He will direct your path.” ~Prov. 3:5,6 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” ~Phil. 4:13 these are my favourite verses.. they help me when i’m going through trials and such.. it’s always good to have scripture to help you leave the devil hanging.. he won’t know what hit him.. the more scripture you know, the stronger you are for battle, especially in school with all the worldy issues going down.. just keep it real. look up. and your actions will speak louder than words. keep it cool.

*phew* the first full week of school is over. Wow. I’m still hanging on to a few remaining threads of excitement. Honestly, Monday seemed so long ago for me because of so much readings and assignments to start thinking about. And even though I do feel a bit stressed and already feeling tempted to procrastinate, there’s an even stronger sense of peace and determination just knowing God’s right with me every step of the way...and that’s a really awesome feeling!
Hope everyone’s having as much fun in school as you should be! =P
